Video Play Back

Hi,

I am having trouble getting video playback to work. I have tried quite a
few combinations but none have worked.

First:

  • Phone: Nokia 2700 classic - basic feature phone but has video
    capabilities
    - Video File: formatted using Mobile Media Converter into a .3gp and
plays just fine through the phones normal media player.
  • I am using demo mode for all my testing.
  • PNG files in the same directory as the video appear in labels and
    attached to questions.

What I have tried:

  • Using a video question
  • Using a select-one question and attaching a video
  • Using the default location
  • Using a label and attaching a video
    - Making the video shorter
  • Using CommCare Sense (I'm not quite sure I have this working correctly)

In all cases I get a screen displaying a giant # and telling me to press it
for play/pause/ When I do press it nothing seems to work.

If anyone has experience getting basic video to play back and knows where I
am messing up I would love to get some feedback.

Thanks,

  • Trevor

Trevor,

You are not the first to run across troubles trying to get videos to play
on Nokia phones. Unfortunately the phones are very, very finicky about what
files they'll accept in applications (but not the native player of course,
go figure).

Have you checked out the 3GP Video Guidelines for the mobile media
converter at the bottom of our guide at
https://confluence.dimagi.com/display/commcarepublic/Video+in+CommCare

?

These parameters have worked in the past for all of our videos. You might
be able to tweak them for different qualities, etc, but I think they've
always worked as a jumping off point.

Thanks Clayton,

I think the problem I was having was getting CommCare Sense to work
correctly. After playing with the settings a few more times I managed to
tweak it just right. Works great now.

Trevor,

Great to hear you got things working.

Was it clear what combination of settings was making the video not work
correctly? I'd like to address the fact that HQ and CommCare let you build
an app which wouldn't play your videos, if possible!

Otherwise, let me know if you have any other questions or issues.

Regards,
-Clayton
