Too many incomplete forms

Hi all,

We have an interesting issue in the field that I was hoping someone could
address. We have recently put a final password field in our forms (using a
validation condition on a text field, not the new password field type) so
that some on-site supervisors can review the form answers before submitting
the form to CommCareHQ.

This was working fine, until one of the tablets had a little over 1,000
incomplete forms on it when it came back for review. Now when the
supervisor tries to tap on the ‘Incomplete’ button on the home screen, the
tablet never loads the forms. Is this simply an issue of loading too many?
Is there a maximum that CommCare ODK will try to load? And if not, what are
our options for manually extracting these forms from the app/tablet via USB
or other method?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You!
Caleb

Caleb,

Its definitely possible that CommCare is struggling to load that many
incomplete forms. In general we recommend people not rely on using
Incomplete Forms for a number of reasons, a major one being that the data
is never backed up on the server and the amount of local data can get
unwieldy. There’s also a potential issue having to do with application
updates - if your form changes and you update your application, the form
model of the incomplete form can become incompatible with the new form and
unable to be loaded without a complicated procedure. Its possible your
issue is related to this (IE CommCare simply doesn’t know how to load the
older forms and is choking somehow). You can read more about this here
https://confluence.dimagi.com/display/commcarepublic/CommCare+for+Android+Force+Close+from+Loading+Incomplete+Forms
(though
not certain that’s the issue yet).

Unfortunately there’s also not a great to recover the incomplete forms via
external methods - they’re represented internally as Form objects, not
something readable like XML, and further are encrypted by the specific
device.

I’d recommend filing a bug report through our normal support process
https://confluence.dimagi.com/display/commcarehq/Bug+Report+Template and
our team can look into your specific situation.

Best,
Will
