SD card requirement for running CommCare

Hi Vivek,

I'm forwarding your note to the commcare-users list since it's a good one.

CommCare technically doesn't require a memory card if you aren't using any
multimedia, but we always recommend getting them (they are nice to have for
the CHWs to store music/photos/etc. on and are not very expensive). If you
are planning on using any multimedia than the memory card is required to
store it. Generally we also recommend getting memory cards from a reliable
vendor/manufacturer as we've seen some reliability problems with some of
the cheaper cards you can get in local markets and such.

I'm guessing our field staff can chime in with more insights or if there's
anything I got wrong/missed.

thanks,
Cory

We are working with WV in Zambia. Regarding purchase of phone models for
running CommCare I have seen this on Dimagi's confluence.
https://confluence.dimagi.com/display/commcarepublic/Known+Supported+Phones .
Looking elsewhere on the confluence I found this -->
https://confluence.dimagi.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=7144254. This
suggests that SD card is necessary. Is there some guidance on how much
memory is required on the phone to use it without SD card? Or you recommend
that SD card is mandatory for running CommCare?

I just want to second Cory's recommendation for a memory card. I would
strongly recommend one. Most of the Nokia phones that I have used have
very little internal memory. When that memory starts to fill up (CHWs
will inevitably put music/videos on the phone) things start to slow
down a lot.

I highly recommend an SD card.
