New Feature: Easy Multimedia Install for Android

Dear Users,

We're excited to announce a feature for CommCare Android users who have
multimedia in their applications.

Previously, you had to install multimedia files separately from the actual
application in a two-step process. We have now enabled multimedia download
on install. When you deploy your application to an Android device, simply
check the "Include Multimedia" checkbox to remotely download the multimedia
files along with the application.

Please note that this feature has some important details for applications
with large amounts of multimedia and projects that rely on remote update. See
our help site:
https://help.commcarehq.org/display/commcarepublic/Installing+CommCareODK+Android#InstallingCommCareODKAndroid-B-InstallingMultimedia(optional)

Thanks,
The CommCare Team

This is a great addition. Thanks!

I have a related question, which others may be wondering about: (how) can
I remove media files previously uploaded to CCHQ?

Here our use case: we previously uploaded menu icons, images and audio
files to CCHQ. However, we would like to only bundle icons and images with
the application download, and continue to manually install audio files.
So, we'd like to remove uploaded audio files to keep them from being
automatically downloaded and installed with the application and icon/image
files. We have two reasons to exclude audio files: (1) They are big, (2)
We use a single audio file path for all Mayan language recordings, and
install different audio files for different CHWs

Thanks, Ray

Hi Ray,

You would have to remove the multimedia references in the xform for the
multimedia you didn't want to include, download the zip (this cleans the
references), and then add the reference back in to the xform (without
uploading the file to HQ). Unfortunately, there is currently no way to
remove uploaded multimedia files without removing the references.

Best,
