Linking cases help

Dear all

I have two modules. The first one registers HH Head and his all members
that currently live with him.Inside this form there is also two repeat
groups which registers malaria cases and TB cases.

The second module holds Adult male and female ,inside this module there is
one form witch asks about HIV for male only and Family health for female
adults.Inside the family health group there is repeat group which registers
Birth if the woman give birth.

Here what i need is how to link those all cases with their data.I am not
sure which variable to take for linking.

Any one who have experience on this.?

Hi Tewelde,

Because you are opening cases from repeats, I assume you are using Child
cases?

I recommend reading this Help Site page on how to link parent and child
case data:
https://confluence.dimagi.com/display/commcarepublic/Linking+Parent+and+Child+Case+Data

Hope this is helpful!

Hi Amelia

I am creating form Export as this is one time survey.I have read this link
and only shows whenever using case export.I have already exported the data
using form export and need to link Household head with his members and
Mother with here children.

In case export only updated information of the case is available. The rest
one time visit(serious of question are not available.).So that i don't to
use case export.

There is Row number,Row number_0,Row number_1 in the Form export .Do you
think those variables are useful for linking ?If so How?

Hi Tewelde,

If you are using the form export, you can link each form to the case it
belongs to using the case id. The case id is available in a form export if
that form updated the case. You can find it along with other generic near
the bottom when you create a form export:

You can use this ID to link the form to its case, and in the case export
you can use parent ID to link your child cases to their parents. In this
way you can link form data about a child case back to the household head.

In the future, there are tricks you can use during application design that
make this process a bit easier. For example, you could save household head
name or ID to its child cases as a case property. In forms, you can load
this household head id case property into child forms in a hidden value.
Then each form submission will contain the name or ID of the household
head. In your form exports, the id of the household head will be right
there.

To answer your question about the rows in the excel sheet - these
correspond to repeat groups. If you included repeat groups in your form
export, each row corresponds to a different repeat group in the form. You
can find each repeat group's data in another tab in your export.

Glad we're getting closer! And I should have been more specific about how
to get the parent id - you were right, it does have to do with the row
numbers.

In the case export for a child case, you should see a section called
"Parent Cases". Inside this section is a "case id". This is what I was
referring to as the parent id.

Parent case ids will show up in a separate sheet or tab with a row number
that corresponds to the main export sheet/tab, very similar to repeat data.

Hi Tewelde,

If you are using the form export, you can link each form to the case it
belongs to using the case id. The case id is available in a form export if
that form updated the case. You can find it along with other generic near
the bottom when you create a form export:

You can use this ID to link the form to its case, and in the case
export you can use parent ID to link your child cases to their parents. In
this way you can link form data about a child case back to the household
head.

In the future, there are tricks you can use during application design
that make this process a bit easier. For example, you could save household
head name or ID to its child cases as a case property. In forms, you can
load this household head id case property into child forms in a hidden
value. Then each form submission will contain the name or ID of the
household head. In your form exports, the id of the household head will be
right there.

To answer your question about the rows in the excel sheet - these
correspond to repeat groups. If you included repeat groups in your form
export, each row corresponds to a different repeat group in the form. You
can find each repeat group's data in another tab in your export.

Hi Tewelde,

In case useful, please see this help site page:
https://wiki.commcarehq.org/display/commcarepublic/Linking+Parent+and+Child+Case+Data

If you have multiple levels of parent/child relationships then you will
need to link the levels one at a time. For example, if you have parent ->
child -> grandchild, then you could link parent -> child, and then child->
grandchild to generate a master case list of grandchild cases that have the
child and parent ids.
