I believe that calculations in this scenario will not work, but you can overcome this by implementing this in a different manner. I am thinking that different alerts are generated for each number of days missing. For example, an alert for one day, an alert for two days, and an alert for more than three days.
This can also be saved as a property if the value is going to be updated by an automatic update rule.
