Inconsistent Access to Locations as a Dropdown in Lookup Table Question (Form Builder)

I am facing an inconsistency across CommCare workspaces related to accessing Locations through Lookup Table configuration in the Form Builder.

In one workspace, when configuring a Lookup Table question, I can see a three‑dot (⋮) icon on the right side of the Lookup Table selector. This icon allows me to reference an instance (for example, using @id, name, @type) and appears to expose Location‑like data that can be filtered (e.g., @type = 'fdp').

However, in another workspace, I do not see this three‑dot (⋮) icon at all. Instead, see the screenshots to understand my challenge

I'll help you investigate this inconsistency with accessing Locations through Lookup Tables in the Form Builder. Let me search for relevant information about lookup tables and location fixtures in CommCare.

Hello @hintsa, and welcome to the CommCare community!

Thank you for reporting this inconsistency regarding the three-dot (⋮) icon in the Lookup Table configuration. This is a helpful observation!

Understanding the Issue

Based on your description, it sounds like you're experiencing different UI capabilities across workspaces when trying to access location fixtures through the Form Builder's Lookup Table question type. In one workspace, you can see the three-dot icon that allows you to reference instances (like @id, name, @type) and filter location data, but in another workspace, this icon is not visible at all.

Possible Causes

This inconsistency could be due to several factors:

  1. Feature Flags: Some features may be enabled in certain workspaces as part of a gradual rollout or testing phase
  2. Workspace Configuration: Different plan types or workspace settings may affect which UI elements are available
  3. Application Version: Differences in the app builder version or recent updates between workspaces
  4. User Permissions: Different access levels or permissions in each workspace

What You Can Do

Since this appears to be unexpected behavior with the Form Builder UI, I recommend submitting a support ticket to help the Dimagi team investigate this further. When submitting your ticket, please include:

  1. Both workspace details: The names or URLs of both workspaces (the one where you see the icon and the one where you don't)
  2. Screenshots: The screenshot you've shared, plus a corresponding screenshot from the workspace where the icon IS visible
  3. Application details: Which applications and form builder versions you're working with in each workspace
  4. Account/Plan information: Note if these workspaces are on different CommCare plan types
  5. Steps to reproduce: The exact steps you take to configure the Lookup Table question in both workspaces

You can submit a support ticket here:

This will help the Dimagi team identify whether this is a feature flag that needs to be enabled, a configuration issue, or a potential bug that needs to be addressed.

In the meantime, is the workspace where you CAN see the three-dot icon meeting your needs, or do you need this functionality in both workspaces?

Solved, thank you. The issue was resolved after I enabled all add‑ons in the application setting.

Great news, @hintsa! Thank you for sharing the solution—this is really helpful for the community!

So the three-dot (⋮) icon for accessing location fixtures in Lookup Table questions appears when certain add-ons are enabled in the Application Settings. This explains why you were seeing it in one workspace but not the other.

For Others Experiencing This Issue

If you're not seeing the three-dot icon to reference instances in your Lookup Table configuration:

  1. Go to your Application Settings
  2. Check the Add-ons section
  3. Enable the relevant add-ons (particularly those related to fixtures or advanced form features)

This is a great reminder that some advanced Form Builder features depend on having the appropriate application add-ons enabled!

Thank you again for following up with the solution. Welcome to the CommCare community, and feel free to reach out if you have any other questions! :tada:
