I have created some excel dashboards so that we can use our CommCare data
in real time. As our project progresses I am aware that the volume of raw
data will increase. Does anyone have experience of using dashboards over a
long period of time and if so have you found that the dashboard slows down
/ becomes unresponsive with an increase of data?
The size of your exports does become difficult for Excel as the file
grows. The two things to look out for are:
Autodownload - when the export file becomes large Excel will tend to time
out while trying to download and update the file. When this happens it is
best to manually download the file and save it locally then point your
dashboard to that. This timeout is different on internet connections and
versions of Excel, so there's not hard rule for when you'll start seeing
the trouble. I think in general if a download takes more than 3-5 minutes
it starts to timeout.
Computer Performance: Generally Excel seems to handle tens of thousands
of lines and the low hundreds of thousands ok, but as the file is bigger
performance suffers. If this happens you can try limiting your export by
date so that you only get more recent data.
These aren't really CommCare limitations and more the limits of Excel, but
hopefully can use as guidelines.
