Changing question types without messing up data

The organization I am with has been collecting Village Name and Clinic Name
as a text question for several years. This has resulted in several outputs
for the same village and clinic due to differences in input by user. (E.g.
Village name "Lovers' Twist" comes up at L Twist, Love Twist, Lover's
Twist, etc.)

I want to correct this issue by changing question type to single answer and
using lookup tables, but I am concerned about the existing data. What is
the best way for me to correct the existing data and have the new and old
data appear in the same column when I export?

Thank you for any guidance!

Katie

Hey Katie,

If you keep the question ID the same, this should keep the data in the same
column when you do a form export. Unfortunately, you won't be able to edit
the existing forms to fix up the old incorrect names (i.e. L Twist or Love
Twist) but all the data should appear in the same column.

Depending on what you're doing with the data, it might be easier to have a
different question ID for the single answer question so you can distinguish
which forms have "standardized" names vs. user entered names.

Thanks,
Sheel

Thank you for the information, Sheel. If I wanted to update the existing
cases to correct the village and clinic names, would the best option be to
update the cases in Excel as explained on the wiki at
https://confluence.dimagi.com/display/commcarepublic/Updating+Cases+-+Setup+Excel+File?
I understand that past form data will not be updated, but I would like the
case properties to be corrected.

Hey Katie,

Yup, you can just the bulk case importer to fix up any existing cases.
