Advice please: completing forms with Airplane Mode ON

Your advice would be appreciated.

We are having problems with tablet response times. The tablets have SIMs in
them and a data plan.

My hunch is that part of this problem is due to fact that the tablet is
trying to connect to the internet to sync on a form by form basis when the
data service via the SIM is not good.

Can you foresee any problems with us instructing fieldworkers to switch
Airplane Mode ON during the day and then switching Airplane Mode OFF at the
end of the day (when they are back in the office where the data service
should be good) and syncing then?

My understanding is that GPS positioning works when Airplane Mode is ON.

Thanks in anticipation.

Simon

Simon,

GPS triangulation usually works in Airplane mode; however, this capability
is device specific so I'd verify this on your own tablets first.

CommCare is designed to work with the device offline for days at a time, so
I don't think you'll have any issues with the devices being in airplane
mode for the day.

Cheers,
Will

Simon,

In Android 5+ it's actually also become somewhat easier to specifically
turn off *mobile data *as a concrete item, rather than turning on airplane
mode entirely.

On stock android the process is:

  • Swipe down from the top of the screen twice to get to the system
    controls
  • Click in the middle of the screen on the network indicator (network
    name + the signal triagle)
  • Click the small toggle to the right of the words "Cellular Data", this
disables your data connection but leaves the tower comms + sms + wifi on.

This would leave the phone capable of at least doing triangulation /
tower-based location services, which should decrease battery usage and
increase accuracy.
