A little feedback on the new forms editor design

Hi all --

Dimagi folks, can you forward my below feedback on the new forms editor
design, to the appropriate person? I'm sure there's a dedicated email for
that but I don't know it. Maybe others here might have inputs also.

I don't expect a reply on this, I just wanted this to go to the right
person.

-- Congratulations on the new design, it's quite sharp and improved!

-- One request. In the new design, please see the left pane, which contains
the list of all the forms and also the modules that the forms are contained
within. Well, in the new design, the appearance of the module entries are
super similar to the appearance of the forms entries. So when you look
over there to say "ok, now I want to hop over to form XXX" ... you have to
look at bit and adjust your eyes to weed out the forms from the module
entries.
**** I think that most people would say that it is far, far more common
that people reach over to go to a form rather than click on a module
header.
**** My own preference would be that when I glance over, the forms titles really
stand out and everything that's not a form title (i.e. module headers) are
sort of visually weaker. Maybe regular old boldface would be the way. Then
I would visually scan through my old familiar list of forms and be less
distracted.

-- Second: You know the animated commcare logo that appears when the system
is asking you to wait a little bit. Well I agree that the spiral DNA-like
shape that rotates around is really cool to look at... but its fanciness is
just a little bit distracting and jumps out at you when you are mainly just
trying to stay in the zone of your work. Doesn't feel like a calm visual
element to ease your work. the simplest animation possible would probably
be fine.

-- Also: I see on the page that now lists all the "deploy versions," each
one now has a separate large box. It seems giant of big and large compared
to the earlier method, which seemed to have one fairly neat little line for
each one. To be honest, the previous design was just fine. In this new
one, at the least, could you bring the two buttons (revert and deploy) so
they are on the same level with the comment line... and thus that would
decrease the height/space of the overall box by a third? That would feel
more focused.

thanks!

Sorry, adding another comment as I use the editor more --

-- When I am looking in the middle pane, which has the list of questions
and answer items in it.. I see that you have placed, along the left edge of
every row, those grey-colored lines and connectors that are supposed to
give a sense of the hierarchical position of that piece in the overall
structure.

  • You know, those grey lines and connectors at the left side don't
really help anything at all. They give the same information as the simple
fact that one row is indented below another one. But the grey lines and
things do create way more visual clutter and make it less convenient to
    visually scan through the list.

  • Furthermore, the grey things are odd... the very first one at the top
of my app, for example, has a line that reaches vertically above it, sort
of implying that this element is somehow part of a series before it...when
it's not! it's the first one. And in other places the lines stop and start
in a way that totally removes their ability to give a sense of grouping or
    hierarchy.

  • Can you just remove those grey elements at the left of each row? That
    would help!

Note, I do see that those lines provide a way of collapsing a section to
remove what's below it. That collapsing can be done by means of a tiny,
non-distracting "plus or minus" icon.

About my comments about the new forms editor design above.

Since the new version that's available now has those rough aspects that
make it a bit less smoother to use than the previous version, I've flipped
the switch to use the previous version...

About my feedback above -- Can anyone tell me if there is a more
appropriate place to give feedback on the new forms editor design?

Eric,

Thanks for the feedback - I've passed this along to my colleagues who've
been managing this feature.

Cheers,
Will
