Trouble Opening CommCare XML File

Hello,

We recently downloaded the attached CommCare case form files directly from
a tablet. They appear in XML format but even when we open them in an XML
viewer, they do not appear correctly.

Does anyone have any experience downloading and opening finished forms in
XML format from CommCare?

Thank you!

Best,
Perrie

Hey Perrie,

I think we may encrypt the form data on the mobile so that its not directly
accessible. What information are you trying to get?

You can use WiFI direct to get the forms onto another Android device if you
need to submit the data from the another device.

Thanks,

Thank you Sheel and Will. The next step is for me to meet this mobile
worker in-person later this month and look at her tablet in-person. For
more information, here is the trouble she was running into - an issue of
saving incomplete forms, then not being able to access the forms again.
However, we were able to export the XML files after she sent in this
feedback:

I have kept my providers’ datas as incomplete forms( total of 41
providers) as I want to double check their data especially their programs.

After having a meeting with you, I tried to make complete the forms from
incomplete ones.

However, as soon as I connected wifi, I cannot open all of my incomplete
files and the screen showed unfortunately, CommcareODK has been stopped.

Now, How should I carry on the process?

Sheel is right about encryption - you won't be able to copy the forms
directly from the application's data folder and read them.

Another option you might look into would be the SD Card Transfer
https://confluence.dimagi.com/display/commcarepublic/Sending+forms+from+an+SD+card?src=search
process. The forms are decrypted as part of the transfer between devices so
after performing the form dump you'll be able to load up the SD card on
your computer and read the forms as plain XML.

Best,
Will

Perry,

We do not recommend keeping forms incomplete on your device for a sustained
period of time as part of your workflow. One reason is because if your
application changes and the device updated, sometimes the underlying
application model will change in a way that makes the device no longer able
to open a form created by the older version. (For example, a question might
be deleted in a newer version and the older form will have an answer saved
for that question, causing a conflict when the form is loaded). I'm
guessing that is what's happening here.

If that sounds possible, some instructions on how to recover the forms can
be found here
https://confluence.dimagi.com/display/commcarepublic/CommCare+for+Android+Force+Close+from+Loading+Incomplete+Forms.
If not, please report a bug
https://confluence.dimagi.com/display/commcarepublic/Bug+Reports and we
can look into it further.

In the future, I'd recommend using saved forms or case management to review
data on the mobile instead of keeping forms as incomplete (which, in
addition to the bug above, will keep the data from reaching the server and
leave you without any data backup.)

Best,
Will

Thank you Will. The habit we are working to address is to fill out half the
form in the field, save the incomplete form, and then fill the rest of the
form in the office. This resulted in many incomplete forms just sitting on
tablets. Not good, I know! I will do as the link you sent suggest and post
an update to this thread when I have it.

Perrie
