Tips for poor connectivity?

Hi,

I'm just developing and testing my first commcare app for use in a rural
area in Malawi. I'm running in to problems with connectivity here that is
making life rather difficult - even using the wifi in the office I am
struggling to connect to the server to log in after installing a new app or
to download the data. The wifi works fine for computers (I am writing this
on my laptop using the wifi) but is very hit and miss for the phone. To be
honest I also had this problem at times in the UK!

I'm concerned that when my field workers are out and using the mobile
network to connect they are going to struggle too. Does anyone have any
ideas, tips or suggestions?

I was wondering if there was a way of getting the data off the phones
without using a network? My previous experience using PDAs to collect data
was much simpler as you just plugged the PDA in to the laptop, pressed the
'sync' button and all the data transferred.

Any help gratefully received!

Thanks

Jenny

Hi Jennifer,

Which phone model are you using? I've had similar experiences with some
Android phones connecting poorly to wifi. However, those phones seemed to
connect to the mobile data network just fine. Have you tried doing the
installation over the mobile data network? If that works well and there is
good data availability in your deployment area, then sending data will not
be a problem.
