Hey cc-users,

I'm having a problem with one of the CHV phones down here in Dodoma. This
CHV is running a Newborn application which uses both audio and graphic
multimedia.

She came to me with her phone because when she opened the application and
entered the "newborn form" she received an "Application Error". I pressed
details, and this was the message:

\*Media format not supported! Uri: jr://file/audio/emergency\_signs\_baby.mp3
exception msg:sounds not allowed. \*

\*(Useful note is that "emergency\_signs\_baby.mp3" is the first audio
recording to be played in this form.) \*

First, I checked that specific file, and it's fine, not corrupted or
missing.

Then, I thought that this was specific to her SD card (it kind of looked low
quality), so I put the application and multimedia files on my SD card (which
is of high quality). I inserted my SD card (with the application and files
on it) and installed the application. I attempted to enter that form, and I
got the same "Application Error" message.

Then, I thought the problem could be with the application. So, I stuck my
SD card (with application and files) into my phone. But, I installed the
application and entered the form successfully.

Then, I thought it could be a phone "mode" problem. I've checked to make
sure the phone is in "General" mode, not in "silence" or another mode that
might inhibit the use of sound.

All to no avail! It seems its a phone specific problem, but I'm not sure
what the problem is. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Nick

Hey,

This is the 2700c for both the CHV and my test phone.

Also, I played the mp3 file outside of the application if that provides any
useful information/clues.

Thanks,
Nick

the only thing i would think of is that the phone is muted or in the
'silent' profile, but you say you've checked that. is there a multimedia
permission setting for the app?

Hm, reading the error again, it looks like the

"_sounds not allowed_" message is the one from the phone (I should clean up
the message).

That definitely implies that somewhere on the phone there is a setting
preventing it from playing. If it comes down to it and you can't find the
setting, I bet a factory restore would fix the problem.

Hey,

Alright, I figured it out. It was a local setting on the phone. The
setting is located here: Settings\>Tones\>Application Tones

The "Application Tone" setting was set to "Off". I changed it to "On", and
this fixed the problem. Not sure, how that got set to "Off".

Thanks for the tip to look around for a local setting.

Hey cc-users,

I've added this to the CommCare wiki's troubleshooting page. You can find
steps to solve this and other problems there.
