Reporting

I'm curious to learn what tools and processes CommCare community is using
to report on CommCare projects or integrate CommCare projects into other
systems. Interested to learn from any experiences good or bad with tools
like SSRS, Tableau, BIRT, SAS, others? Also interested to hear any
experiences with integrating CommCare with other systems (DHIS2? Financial?
monitoring & evaluation systems, Workflow/email or SMS notifications based
on business rules applied to CommCare data? etc.)?

:)Ben

The question with DHIS2 pops up from time to time...especially ODK/CommCare
linked with DHIS2 because the DHIS2 mobile client isn't great. Last time I
checked, some students were throwing this idea around but nothing came of
it. Anyone have experience with it now?

Hi Ben and Sarah,

Thanks for writing in; your message touches on a couple of topics that are
on Dimagi's horizon. We have heard a lot of interest around integration
both with third party reporting tools (like Tableau) and with health
information systems (like DHIS2).

In terms of reporting tools, we are launching an evaluation to see which
tools work best with the data you typically see in CommCareHQ. We are
hoping to have a recommended set of tools and strategies for integrating
with them sometime this year. We will also be building out core features
to better support data analytics in CommCareHQ (but definitely not be
building a full BI tool in CommCareHQ).

In terms of health information system integration, we do not currently
integrate with any other major systems directly (though our APIs allow you
to do so). Instead, we're excited to have received support from the Gates
Foundation to work on the Motech Suite. The Motech Suite is an open source
integration platform which includes CommCare as part of its core products.
It will enable data orchestration between mhealth tools, including mobile
data systems like CommCare and health information systems like DHIS2,
OpenMRS, and OpenLMIS. We are currently targeting integration between
CommCare and DHIS2 as the first key integration use case of MOTECH Suite,
with the goal of enabling integration between the two systems without any
custom code.

Work is in initial design phases right now, so this won't begin to be
released until next year. We are eager to hear from you all what your
experiences have been with using reporting and health information systems
with CommCare so far! And if DHIS2 integration is a key use case fo you or
others, please reach out directly to me to see if we can get you in to the
design validation and beta testing.

Thanks,
Amelia

Hi all,

Reviving this thread two years later because that is the reason why I exist
on the CommCare user group...

Anybody know the status of DHIS2 integration with CommCare under the Motech
suite? I can find very little info about the Motech suite online, and it
barely mentions integration with DHIS2.

Are people finding that DHIS2 Tracker meets all of their needs for
transactional/individual event (as opposed to aggregate) data (doesn't seem
like that should be the case?)? I have only heard of heavily edited
individual instances of CommCare being able to link with DHIS2, not through
standard, widely available products.

Thanks,
Sarah

Hey Sarah,

MOTECH is able to integrate with DHIS2 (up to DHIS2 2.20 at the moment).
We can pass the beneficiary level information through MOTECH to DHIS2
(using the DHIS2 tracker data). We are also able to pass information into
DHIS2 datasets (aggregate data) if CommCare is collecting the aggregate
data.

The main gap is that CommCare typically deals with individual / beneficiary
level data and DHIS2 typically is setup for aggregate data. In a few of
our projects, we've had to modify DHIS2 to support accepting individual
data (using the tracker), and then have DHIS2 aggregate the tracker data.
We're currently investigating some options to aggregate the data directly
in CommCare before passing it to DHIS2.

Happy to chat offline about what's possible and share more information.

Thanks,
Sheel

Hi Sarah and co.,

MOTECH is great! You're also welcome to check out OpenFn.org—it's been up
and running for a while now and connects CommCare to DHIS2. It's even
possible (though more complex) to do a 2-way connection, polling DHIS2 for
new data to make form submissions (and updates to Cases) in CommCare. I'd
be happy to show you how it works.

Sheel is spot on that the challenge with DHIS2 is usually converting
individual data to aggregate. For individual record systems, many of our
users choose Salesforce. (We recently did a very cool 2-way group and
individual attendance tracking system with Salesforce and CommCareHQ with a
2-way, real-time sync.) We're also able to connect to Zoho Reports,
CartoDB, and other web-based analysis systems.

Best,
Taylor
