Hello everyone!

If you had to buy a Java phone for a CommCare project… instead of an
Android phone… which model might be best?

One project of ours may have a reason to prefer Java phone, and so I wanted
the best option.

(We're buying the phones in Thailand, by the way, though I don't expect you
to know about regional variations...)

Got a favorite Java phone?

thanks!
Eric

Aha -- I got a reply by email from Saijai --

she said:

"... Nokia C2-01. Most of the large scale project used this model.

Hi -- I haven't checked (and it's possible we may find that we will go with
android anyway.) But if I get information about availability, I'll let
you know --

Hello Eric,

You can check our recommended phones page here
[https://confluence.dimagi.com/display/commcarepublic/Recommended+Phones+and+Choosing+a+Phone#RecommendedPhonesandChoosingaPhone-Recommendedphones:](https://confluence.dimagi.com/display/commcarepublic/Recommended+Phones+and+Choosing+a+Phone#RecommendedPhonesandChoosingaPhone-Recommendedphones:)
for more information about tested and approved Java-enabled phones.

Note that Microsoft, the maker of Nokia handsets, has given indications
that it is likely to move out of this production market. THus, depending on
the duration of your project, it may make more sense to go with a low-end
Android phone; the recommended models in this range are listed on our
helpsite here
[https://confluence.dimagi.com/display/commcarepublic/Recommended+Phones+and+Choosing+a+Phone#RecommendedPhonesandChoosingaPhone-RecommendedPhones:](https://confluence.dimagi.com/display/commcarepublic/Recommended+Phones+and+Choosing+a+Phone#RecommendedPhonesandChoosingaPhone-RecommendedPhones:)

That is great input -- thank you. Here are questions/comments in response
to your note about microsoft/nokia possibly cancelling java phones:

1-- First, a question: Let's imagine that my project purchased the very
last box of fifty Nokia C2-01 mobile phones ever made, and we started
working with those. Is there a chance that Dimagi's support for Java
phone functionality on the CommCare side of things might eventually be
halted as an eventual result of the discontinuation that was done by
Nokia/Microsoft?

2-- Just FYI, the consideration that is making us consider Java phones is
not in fact budget. Rather, it is that the outreach workers carrying the
phones might be operating in poor security conditions, and the nicer
smartphones could be seen as creating a target for robbery. However, we
are still far from deciding that this is actually going to be a
consideration for us. I'm simply getting all the info.

Thanks! --Eric

In answer to Malik -- I just looked around mobile stores and also more
informal mobile markets here in Bangkok, and it looks like
(1) Nokia C2-01 is definitely not manufactured anymore and nobody has it in
stock,
(2) the only way I would get that phone is by purchasing old used ones from
used mobile vendors.
