New Feature: Importing Cases into CommCare

Hi all,

Do you have data in another system that you would like to import into
CommCare?

Previously, our Case Importer allowed you to update existing cases in
CommCare with data from an excel file. Now, you can use the same kind of
excel file to create cases too. On import, you can set case properties and
assign the case to one of your existing users.

We hope this makes it easier to transition to CommCare and to integrate
with any other data collection systems.

For more details, read:
https://help.commcarehq.org/display/commcarepublic/Excel+Importer+Instructions

Thanks,
Tyler and the CommCareHQ Team

This looks like a great feature. I have not yet tried to use it, but have
read the documentation and have a couple of questions:
1 - How do you configure the owner of new cases, and can the case owner be
a case sharing group?
2 - Are you planning to extend the tool to support creating child cases?

FYI. We developed two custom tools that include similar capabilities, and
would love to be able to switch over to standard tools. Not sure if it
will help, by the documentation/examples for a custom user/group/community
configuration tool can be found
herehttps://tuladotorg.atlassian.net/wiki/display/KAWOK/User%2C+group+and+community+configuration,
and a patient record importing tool is documented
herehttps://tuladotorg.atlassian.net/wiki/display/KAWOK/Importing+patient+information
.

Thanks, Ray Brunsting

Ray,

"1 - How do you configure the owner of new cases, and can the case owner be

For configuring the owner you can map a column to the owner_id field.
Unfortunately this needs to be the actual id of the group or user which can
be found in the URL. See this screenshot:
Dropbox - Error - Simplify your life.

Case sharing groups and users both work for this.

"2 - Are you planning to extend the tool to support creating child cases?"

We have discussed this but there isn't a plan to start this quite yet.
