Excel and commcare

I am trying to make a commcare form in excel and then edit the items I add
in the xml form in excel through commcare. I was able to upload the excel
form into commcare, but I wasn't able to edit the items I added in the
excel form through commcare and I really need you're help.
Can someone please tell me how to do this?
Thanks.

Hi Nando --

-- I'm not a dimagi person so I can't give as strong input. But a few
thoughts:

1-- it's not 100% clear what process you are trying to carry out... your
two sentences were hard to understand. I think they can help you more
easily if you make a super clear list of the things that you hope can
happen, being extra clear and simple.

2-- there is a method called XLSform, which is a method that you can use if
you are building a very large complicated form and so it would be easier to
build and edit the forms content in excel rows, using various codes,
instead of building many many questions by hand in the form builder. You
start in Excel, and then it converts your excel into XML... and then you
pour that into CommCare. Maybe you already have been using this XLSform
method? Or maybe it is really different from what you're wanting.
*** If XLSform is indeed what you will work with, here is a thread that I
started a long time ago when I was trying to figure out the best way to use
XLSform. If you read through it, you might get a bit of orientation on how
it works.

Sorry I can't help more!

Eric

I tried making an xml form in xlsform, and I was able to create one and
then upload that same form into a commcare form. Now that I have done
this, I want to be able to edit the items I created in xlsform in commcare.
I want to do this, since not all the options appear in xlsform, such as
special formatting for text fields.
After uploading the form into commcare, I searched for these items, such as
textfields, and I couldn't find them in the Commcare HQ Website, but when I
viewed the form as a preview, I saw that the form was created and all the
items where there.
I was wondering if its possible for me to upload a form made with xlsform,
and then make any further changes to that form in the Commcare HQ website
to the items in the form originally created with xlsform.

Nando,

While XLSForm and CommCare use the same standard (XForm) and the forms
created in either are generally compatible with the other I would not
recommend the workflow described above. The two platforms deviate from each
other in many significant ways, particularly with more advanced
functionality, and CommCare does a good deal of post-processing on the
source XForms when building CommCare applications. Unless you have very
good reasons I'd strongly recommend building your form exclusively inside
CommCare. If you choose to use external tools to manipulate the forms then
you're entering relatively unchartered territory and our support team will
be unable to help with edge cases that you encounter.

Cheers,
Will
