Does automatic GPS have a speed benefit over non-automatic?

Hi all –

I have a whole lot of users that are using outreach apps that have a manual
form question that collects the GPS coordinates.

I am considering the idea of simply switching it to Automatic collection of
GPS, as described here
https://confluence.dimagi.com/display/commcarepublic/Automatic+GPS+Capture.

But, I think it’s possible that the automatic method will simply take
exactly the same duration of time for the GPS collection… but, the delay
will instead be placed into a delay while the form opens.

If that’s true, I’m thinking it might be better to let the form open
quickly and then keep the GPS question manual. Because: At least then the
user has a sense of what’s happening and the reason for the delay. Whereas,
having it at the beginning would create a general sense of “oh, this system
is so darn sluggish just to load a form.”

So – once you’ve seen that thinking… would there be any speed benefit –
or any other benefit I’m not considering – to choosing automatic GPS?

Thanks!

Eric

Eric,

CommCare won’t actually block the form from loading while the GPS location
is being determined - the user will be able to proceed with form entry as
usual. This is described in more depth in the documentation you linked.
