Creating sub cases

Hello again,

I have a question about creating subcases.

I'll be doing a postnatal interview, collecting data from the mother about
her and her baby(ies). I would like to create a sub case for each baby
that is still alive at the time of this visit (4-6 weeks postnatally).

At the moment my form is structured so that there is a group of questions
set to repeat for the number of live births (as recorded earlier in the
form). This includes, e.g. date of birth, gestation, etc as well as a 'Is
(NAME) still alive?' question. This is the question I would like to use to
create the sub case, and I would like a new sub case for each live child
from the current delivery.

I understand that at the moment it is not possible to create or update a
case from a question that is in a repeat group (as this is, and as are the
answers to other questions that I would also like to use to update the
case). Is this likely to be resolved anytime soon and if not what work
around are others using to create multiple new subcases in the event of
multiple births?

Thanks

Jenny

Hi, Jennifer,

Multiple births are indeed challenging! I'm not sure if we are going to
support opening multiple cases from a repeat in the near future, but here
are two possible workarounds:

1- instead of using a repeat, just have the questions listed as many times
as the maximum number of children you anticipate. For example, if you
don't think there will be more than three children, then you could a
single-select question that said "how many children were born?" with the
options as 1, 2, or 3.

You would then have three "groups" of questions and set the logic to the
first one as (/data/number_of_births = 1 or /data/number_of_births =
2 or /data/number_of_births = 3), etc. You could use each of these groups
to conditionally open a subcase.

Fortunately we have the copy question feature, so you can just make the
group one time, select the group folder and copy it twice, and then just
update the question IDs/text.

2- You could also have a separate "new baby registration form" that the
user fills out as many times as there are babies. You could have this form
as requiring the mother case so that they would still be linked. This,
however, is not quite as elegant and requires filling out multiple forms.

Hope this helps

Jeremy
