Copying and modifying an application

Hello Everyone,

When we copy an application which is currently in use,we would like to know
whether the case list are also copied to the new application?
For example,we are using the application X and we would like to use this
application for a different study, we will copy that application and lets
say give a different name such as application Y. In that scenario, we
notice that not only the application but also the case list were copied. We
would like to know is there any way to include or not to include the case
list when we copy the application.

In relation to this, we also would like to know if we make some changes in
the second application "Y", does it affect the original application "X"?

Please kindly suggest for these questions and thanks for your help.

Best wishes,
Htet

Hi Htet,

When you copy an entire application, all aspects of the application gets
copied over including case lists/details etc. Once the application is
copied over, you can add/edit parts of the app. Currently there is no
provision to choose what components can be included.

If you are really particular about not copying over the entire setup, you
might want to consider copying over individual forms but this can be
cumbersome depending on the size of the app, so wouldn't recommend it.

Making changes to the copied over app does not affect the original
application in any way.

Hi Htet,

Sri's information is right on.

I wasn't sure if when you said "case list" you might have meant the data?
If you did, the data is tied to the user - so if you copy an application
within the same project then use the same username to login to the new
application all the data from the old application will be there. If you
want the data to be wiped you should use a new username. If you want to use
the same user account for both applications but keep the data separate then
you will need to choose different case types for the new application.

thanks,
Cory

In the module settings page there is an option for "case type". If you
change this between the two applications then the cases will not show from
one to the other.

For more information you can see the tutorial

Hi Cory,

Let me continue with my previous post.
I understand that within the same project, we can create different app and
if we use the same username, data from old app can be assessed from new
app. We have tried this and it works well.

My next question is about how to import selected cases for a new app in the
same project.
Let me clarify. Among the total respondents, we would like to follow up
selected cases and we don't want to have all data appeared in the new app.
To achieve this, we tried to do import cases using excel
(Importing Cases Using Excel - CommCare Public - CommCare Public)
but it was not successful and I think I missed some steps.
I have used different case type for new app so that all the data from old
app won't be appeared.
However, the data uploaded using excel (selective cases) also did not show
up in my new app.
Could you please suggest me for that?

Many thanks,
Htet

Hey Htet,

Off the top of my head I'm not sure what would be causing those issues. If
you believe you are encountering a bug in the platform I would recommend
reporting an issue from your project space with clear reproduction steps.
