In the Excel file used to control the commcare-export tool, it is possible to specify that checkbox questions are expanded in the output data to one field per potential answer. Similarly, when defining a manual Data Export there is a tickbox for 'Expand Checkbox Questions'. Ticking this also results in GPS fields being split into their component parts.
