CommCare automatically updating itself?

I see that several versions of CommCare are listed in the deployment screen
with the message "auto-generated by a phone update". What does this mean,
and why is it happening? I do NOT want CommCare to automatically deploy new
versions of itself whenever a user updates, as we're constantly making
changes and testing new forms. I'm not sure if this is related, but I have
"Auto Update Frequency" set to 'Never' in the Build Settings.

Thanks,

Eric

Hi Eric,

Sorry for the troubles you are encountering on this.

This occurs when someone sets up a phone in "Developer mode"

https://confluence.dimagi.com/display/commcarepublic/CommCare+Developer+Options#CommCareDeveloperOptions-ShowUpdateOptionsItem

and

sets the Update Target option to "Latest Saved Build"

https://confluence.dimagi.com/display/commcarepublic/Update+Target+Options

which is used by app developers to test the app during iteration.

Is someone on your team intentionally using the update target feature? Your
users in the field will still not receive the new builds until they are
deployed with a star.

Hey Clayton,

Thanks for the info. We never set anyone's phone to developer mode, and to
my knowledge no one has changed these settings, but I'll look into it.

Eric,

No problem, let us know if you find anything funny going on (IE: phones
which are triggering updates which were never set to do so), and we'd be
happy to dig into the issue with you guys!

Hey Eric. I just wanted to add that the next release of CommCare (2.37)
will also enable us to show the username whose updated request triggered
the build in the build comment (So the comment will read Auto-generated by
a phone update from user {some_username} instead of just Auto-generated by
a phone update). This will allow you to have clear visibility into who is
using this feature, so that you can ask them to turn it off if you do not
want them to be using it.
