Best option for installing multimedia

Hi,

Happy New Year to the Commcare Team!!

I just wanted to clarify something about installing apps with multimedia. I
see I can either transfer the multimedia to my device and then install the
app using wifi, or just install the whole app offline.

If I want to avoid the app updating the multimedia in future updates (data
costs etc), which one should I use? I thought I could use the Offline
Install, but the help page says "All future remote updates will include
changes to multimedia files" - does this mean if I make a small change to
the app, but do not change any multimedia, and then click "Update
Commcare", the media will try to download again?

I want to get this right from the beginning!

Thanks for advice,

Natasha

Natasha,

Once you're in the installed "state" the application should behave
identically whether it was installed via offline install or with regular
install and media transfer. So, you should just pick the more convenient
method.

Also, CommCare tries to download only changed files when updating,
including multimedia. So, you should be fine on this count.

Hi Natasha,

One subtle difference to be aware of is what happens during a remote update
if there have been changes to your app multimedia. If you do "online
install" without the "install multimedia" checkbox checked, you can
install the multimedia files separately and they will not remotely update
in the future.

Otherwise, for either "online install" with the "install multimedia"
checkbox checked, or if you do full offline install, any updates to
multimedia files will be remotely sent down to the app on remote update.

Sorry this is a bit confusing, you can read more in our documentation:
https://help.commcarehq.org/display/commcarepublic/Installing+CommCareODK+Android#InstallingCommCareODKAndroid-Step3:InstallYourCommCareApplication
